ILP Project
NEW TECTONIC CAUSES OF VOLCANO FAILURE AND POSSIBLE PREMONITORY SIGNALS

STUDY AREAS

Field data will be collected in
different tectonic settings in order to obtain information on volcano deformation in reverse, normal and transcurrent faulting environments

We selected three key-sites that are the most representative for evaluating the various components of this project:

STROMBOLI

COTOPAXI MAYON

(Italy, normal faults)

(Ecuador, reverse faults)  (Philippines, strike-slip faults)

These three volcanoes are active, are similar in size and are composed of inter-layered lava and pyroclastic units.
Moreover, the areas surrounding Cotopaxi and Mayon are particularly suitable for tectonic analyses of basement faults, with very good, already known, outcrops of major active faults.
At Stromboli, several oceanographic studies aimed at understanding the morphology and structure of the undersea basement have already been done or are in preparation.

Other active and non-active volcanoes will be proposed, during the successive phases of this project, based on increasing co-operation with other international research groups.
At present, these are:

ESJA

IRIGA

(Iceland, rift system)

(Philippines, strike-slip faults)
